How to Set a Custom WhatsApp Notification Sound for Individual Contacts

You can personalize your WhatsApp experience by setting custom notification sounds for different chats directly from your WhatsApp mobile app or web platform on your desktop.

WhatsApp Mobile App

Launch the WhatsApp application on your mobile phone. Open the chat in which you would like to customize the notification sound.

Tap on the contact name at the top of the screen, and select the Notifications option.

Tap on the Notification tone option to change the sound. You will see the various options/apps to select the sound. Choose the app that has the new notification sound. Select the sound, and click on Save to change it for that specific chat.

WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp users can access the platform on their computers via WhatsApp Web on a web browser or the web application. If you want to set a custom WhatsApp Notification tone for an individual contact on WhatsApp Web, use the WhatsApp Web application.

Open the WhatsApp Web application, go to the specific chat to customize the notification sound, then click on the contact name at the top of the screen.

Tap on the Overview option if it is not selected by default. Find the Notification tone option. Utilize the drop-down menu to select the tone you want as a notification sound.

How to Customize the WhatsApp Notification Sound for Specific Groups

WhatsApp also allows you to customize notification sounds for group chats. Instead of using the same sound for every group, you can set unique alerts for specific WhatsApp group chats on both your mobile app and the web platform.

WhatsApp Mobile App

Go to the WhatsApp application on your mobile phone. Tap to open the group chat in which you want to customize the notification sound.

Once you open the group chat, click on the tap here for group info option at the top of the screen below the group name. If you don’t see tap here for group info, just tap on the group name.

This will enable you to see the group-related information. Tap on the Notifications option below the media tab.

The Notifications option will show the current notification sound for the group chat.

Locate the Notification tone option, and tap on it to change the tone. Select the new sound, and click on Save to set the group chat notification tone.

WhatsApp Web

To set a custom WhatsApp notification sound for specific groups on WhatsApp Web, access WhatsApp Web through the WhatsApp Web application.

Launch the WhatsApp Web application. Open the group chat for which you want to customize the notification sound. Tap on the group name on the top bar of the screen where you can see the group members’ names as well.

You will see the WhatsApp group information on the screen. Select the Overview option if it is not selected by default.

Locate the Notification tone option. From the drop-down, select the tone you want to set as a notification sound for that group.
