Convert Text-Heavy PDF to Google Docs via Google Drive

For PDF files that have significant amount of charts or other design elements, Google Docs will struggle to maintain the formatting. Hence, we only recommend this method if you have a regular text-heavy PDF file with minimal design elements.

Launch Google Drive in your browser and log in with your credentials. Click the New button in the top-left corner of the screen.

Select File Upload, and upload the PDF file from your computer. You can use the keyboard shortcut Alt + C + U to upload the PDF file too, or simply drag and drop the PDF file from your computer to the browser.

Once the file is uploaded, you will see it on your drive.

Right-click on the PDF file and select the Open with option, and select Google Docs.

This will convert the PDF file to Google Docs. You can then edit the file on Google Docs, and save and download it in any format supported by Google Docs.

Convert PDF to Google Docs Without Losing Formatting

For PDF files with intricate formatting and design, use the following methods to convert them to Google Docs format.

Using Microsoft Word

Just like converting Google Docs to Microsoft Word, you can first convert PDF to Microsoft Word, and then into Google Docs.

Open Microsoft Word on your computer. Tap on the File menu from the top-left corner of the screen. Click Open. Browse your PDF file from your computer and open it in Microsoft Word.

Go to File -> Save as in the menu. Change the file type to Word Document (*.docx) from the Save as type option and click the Save button. This will convert the PDF to a Microsoft Word document.

Login to your Google Drive on the web browser. Upload the Word document that you converted earlier to your Google Drive.

Once the document is uploaded, right-click on the Word document and select Open with -> Google Docs.

Using Third-Party Tools

Conversion capabilities of third-party PDF to Word Converters vary. You can choose a suitable tool for your PDF file. In this guide, we are using PDFtoDoc

Open the tool on your web browser. Browse and upload the PDF file on the PDFtoDoc platform.

Once uploaded, the tool automatically converts the PDF to a Word document. Click on the Download to get the converted file on your computer.

Log in to the Google Drive on your web browser. Upload the converted Word file you downloaded from the PDF to the Word converter platform.

After uploading the Word document, right-click on it and choose Open with -> Google Docs.

This will convert PDF to Google Docs without losing formatting. You can edit the file on Google Docs and export it back as a PDF.

Other than converting your PDF files to Google Docs, you can also delete pages from a PDF file or convert a PDF to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
