I am a mother of two children, ages 9 and 11, meaning we are very much in the tween years. While I love the level of independence my children now have, I also struggle with keeping tabs on them when they go to their room or use electronic devices. When I heard about the Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor, I realized it could be the solution I needed to ensure my kids aren’t getting into trouble when I’m not watching.

After all, a baby monitor’s features are designed to help new parents keep a close eye on their infant, so why couldn’t it do the same for slightly older kids? I tested it in my home and compiled my findings in this comprehensive product review.

Unboxing

The Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor arrived in a small, lightweight package at my house. Everything was carefully packaged but easy to unbox.

The Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor includes the following:

  • 1x 2K HD resolution camera
  • 1x 5-inch monitor screen
  • 2x USB-C to USB-A cables
  • 2x power adapters
  • 1x camera mounting bracket + screws

Setup

The Paris Rhone baby monitor is easy to set up: unbox the camera and install it on a flat surface or to the wall, then plug in the monitor to charge it. When the camera is turned on, the monitor will automatically pick up the camera feed and display it on the screen.

I didn’t encounter any issues turning on and setting up the camera or the monitor. However, if you discover the camera and monitor are not communicating, the monitor’s menu options let you walk through the pairing process.

Although only one camera was included with the package I received, the device supports up to two cameras, and the additional camera should also plug and play. When two cameras are operational, the manufacturer says the monitor will enter a split-screen mode so that you can monitor both cameras simultaneously.

Functionality

Once you have installed the camera in a preferred location, its functionality remains rather simple. As long as the camera is plugged in, it will remain operational. Any features, like the 355° pan, 115° tilt, and 4x zoom, are all controlled by the monitor or the smartphone app (see below). The camera also has a port for an SD card (not included) if you want the camera to perform local recording.

The monitor features a directional pad and five buttons: zoom, menu, talk, and back. It includes a kickstand that you can fold in and a 3000mAh battery. When charged, the battery is rated for five to seven days of use, and the screen automatically enters sleep mode when you aren’t actively pressing buttons on the monitor.

With just a few clicks, you can use the monitor to manipulate the camera and see anywhere you’d like in the room. Although it wasn’t quite possible to see exactly what my children were doing on their iPads, I could keep tabs on them well enough as I cooked dinner or performed other household tasks.

When the lights are out in a room, you can still see the action on the camera, thanks to the built-in night vision feature. I also appreciated the three-way audio that allowed me to tell the kids dinner was ready and hear their response.

As a baby monitor, this item is primarily designed with infants in mind, and many features are geared towards that. My children are old enough for me not to need the majority of the key functionalities of this device. That being said, I would have loved to have everything this baby monitor offered when my children were infants.

Some other notable features of the Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor include:

  • Customizable night lights
  • Real-time motion and crying detection
  • Built-in temperature and humidity sensor
  • Feeding alarm reminder

Smartphone App

Most new parents constantly worry about their baby, even when a trusted family member or babysitter watches them. Luckily, Paris Rhone considered this and integrated a smartphone app into the 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor. Naturally, this requires you to connect the camera to your home Wi-Fi network. However, the manufacturer states that the camera includes AES 128-bit encryption for privacy.

The instruction manual includes QR codes to download the smartphone app for Android or iOS. Create an account, then follow the step-by-step instructions to connect the camera to the app.

Personally, I was never able to follow the original directions, which included getting the camera to scan the QR code displayed on my phone. However, there is an alternative method that includes connecting your phone to the camera’s built-in network, then sharing the password information for your Wi-Fi network with the camera. This allowed me to easily connect.

The smartphone app contains many of the same settings and features as the monitor. I found this helpful in situations where I needed to manipulate the camera while in a part of the house that wasn’t near the monitor or while outside. Parents could even use this when away from home, assuming the camera remains connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Smart Home Integrations

I’ll admit, what impressed me the most about the Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor wasn’t the device itself, but the smart home integrations it offered. This device supports both Google Home and Amazon Alexa integrations, meaning those who use either voice assistant can add the camera to their existing setup.

Overall, adding the baby monitor camera to my Google Home system was easy. The CloudEdge app included directions, but it’s pretty straightforward if you already use the Google Home app. Go to Devices, and add and select Works with Google Home. Follow the prompts, and select Cloudedge from the available options.

Once added, the camera appeared under the bedroom I set it to within my setup. Unfortunately, I could not view the live feed using the Google Home app from my smartphone. However, I could see it on my Google Nest Hub, which was handy while I was in the kitchen and the kids were upstairs.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Paris Rhone 2K HD Pan-Tilt Baby Monitor works well as a device to monitor infants or older children. Its tilt, pan, and zoom allow parents to explore every corner of the room, while the smartphone app and smart home integrations make it easier to keep tabs on children, regardless of where you are.

The baby monitor and single camera package is available on Amazon for $99.99 by clipping the Amazon coupon and using the code EARLYBBM20. Alternatively, get it directly from Paris Rhone for $99.99 with the diount code EARLYBIRD60.
