Letting the Tiger Out of the Cage

I received the Redtiger F7NP 4K Dashcam together with the optional hardwire kit, and was immediately impressed with the generous packaging.

The camera box itself includes:

  • F7NP 4K front-facing dashcam
  • GPS mount for the front-facing camera
  • 1080P rear camera
  • Power supply cable with a car charger
  • Cable for connecting the rear camera to the front
  • 2 electrostatic stickers
  • 32 GB microSD card
  • Wire trim tool
  • 5 cable clips
  • Stack of manuals and user guides that struggle with English translation.

The hardwire kit is equally well-equipped

  • 4 different fuse tap sets
  • Long cable for connecting the camera directly to your car’s electronics
  • Another wire trim tool.

This comprehensive package gives you everything you need to install the Redtiger F7NP 4K dashcam in any standard vehicle.

For those with a van, RV, or other longer vehicle, Redtiger offers 33-foot and 50-foot extended cables for purchase. I was able to easily install the camera in my VW Touran (European MPV that’s slightly smaller than the Honda CR-V) using the standard cable.

From Box to Windshield

To take full advantage of the features and capabilities of the Redtiger F7NP 4K dashcam, you must use the hardwire kit, as it can supply power to the camera even when the ignition is turned off, enabling the Parking Mode feature.

The instructions for using the hardwire kit are provided in the manual, and as long as you’re comfortable working with your vehicle’s fuses, you should be able to complete the installation yourself.

However, if you’re not interested in the Parking Mode feature, connect the front-facing camera to your vehicle’s power outlet using the provided charger, which has an extra USB port to not make the power outlet unusable for other devices.

In either case, the first step is to wipe your windshield clean, then apply the provided electrostatic sticker to the desired location. While it’s possible to install the camera without the sticker, it’s recommended to use it, as it helps protect your windshield and makes it easier to move the camera to another vehicle if needed.

Once the sticker is in place, attach the GPS mount to the front-facing camera, then stick the mount to the electrostatic sticker on your windshield. The rear camera can be installed by sticking the provided 3M adhesive to the desired location on your rear windshield, then attaching the camera to the adhesive.

To install the rear 1080P camera, stick it to your rear window, and plug the connector into the corresponding port on the front-facing camera. This will provide both data and power to the rear camera, making for a quick and easy installation process.

The dashcam comes with a microSD card already inserted, so no extra work is needed there. You can short-press the power button to turn on the dashcam, launch the Redtiger app on your mobile device, and connect to the dashcam’s Wi-Fi network, which is where I encountered the first hiccup.

Contrary to what the user manual says, the dashcam’s Wi-Fi network isn’t turned on by default, and you need to go to the settings to enable it. When the Wi-Fi is enabled, it becomes impossible to access the same settings menu to disable it. In fact, it becomes impossible to access the settings menu at all. To regain access to it, you need to hold the Up button to disable the Wi-Fi. This isn’t a major problem, but it’s something that should have been explained better.

On the Road With the Redtiger F7NP

The Redtiger F7NP 4K dashcam starts recording as soon as it’s turned on, saving footage in one-minute long files with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels for the front-facing camera and 1920 x 1080 pixels for the rear camera. You have the option to switch to three- or five-minute intervals if you prefer, but there’s no real advantage, as there are no gaps between the individual video files.

All recorded videos can be stamped with not just the date and time but also speed information and GPS data from the sensor built in to the dashcam mount. I found the GPS unit to be quite accurate, though it can take a short while to find enough satellites. The G-sensor is also accurate and automatically saves footage to a special folder when vibration is detected. Choose from three sensitivity options, or disable the sensor completely.

The G-sensor can also be used to trigger video recording in Parking Mode. Alternatively, configure Parking Mode to create time-lapse footage, where it takes just one image per second. This flexibility ensures that you have the evidence you need, whether it’s capturing an incident in real time or monitoring your vehicle over extended periods.

The front camera has a wide viewing angle of 170°, allowing it to capture everything in front of you, including cars coming from your left or right when standing at an intersection. The rear camera has a viewing angle of 140°, which is just what you need to provide evidence if someone rear ends you. The slightly more zoomed-in view makes it easier to read license plate numbers or identify the person inside the offending vehicle behind you.

Even at night, the dashcam provides clear and detailed footage, as the front-facing camera has a bright aperture of F1.5, while the rear unit has a respectable F2.0. What’s more, the built-in sensor in the lens automatically adjusts the night recording effect based on the amount of light it receives, so you can rest assured that the camera will capture everything you need, even in low-light conditions.

Overall, the Redtiger F7NP 4K dashcam delivers excellent image quality that surpasses its price point. Its performance in various lighting conditions is impressive, even without the optional polarizing filter that can be purchased from Redtiger’s official website.

Using the Redtiger Companion App

The Redtiger F7NP 4K dashcam comes with a companion app that allows you to connect to the camera via Wi-Fi. Once connected, you are greeted with a real-time camera preview. You can display both the front and rear cameras in PiP (and choose which is larger), or view the front or rear camera individually.

If your dashcam has a GPS signal, you can see your current location and direction on a map below the camera preview. The app also has dedicated buttons for pausing recording or taking a picture. When there’s no GPS signal, the two buttons become larger and take up space where the map would be.

The app can also be used to access and download the video files recorded by the dashcam. I found the Wi-Fi connection to be somewhat slow, but not so much that it would be unusable. Most people will hopefully never need to download a video for use as evidence. If you need to transfer a lot of footage, you can always remove the SD card, and connect it to your computer directly.

The settings tab lets you change some (but not all) dashcam settings directly from the app. One setting you absolutely should change is the Wi-Fi password, as you don’t want strangers to be able to connect to your dashcam and download your footage.

Final Thoughts

The Redtiger F7NP 4K Dashcam is a compelling option for drivers seeking a feature-rich dashcam at a competitive price. It delivers excellent video quality in both day and nighttime conditions, thanks to its high-resolution sensors, wide viewing angles, and bright apertures. You can pick up the dashcam now at a 35% discount and clip the $10 off Amazon coupon to pay just $119.99.
