Reddit Will Include Sports Content for Advertising Revenue

If you’re a sports fan who enjoys reading Reddit, you’re in luck. The social media platform has made deals with most major sports leagues for their content in an effort to earn more advertising revenue.

Reddit Deals with NFL, MLB, and More

You may not have been hurting for more content on Reddit, but you’re about to get much more anyway in the way of sports. Reddit made deals with the National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, the PGA Tour, and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, with the hope of making more money off these sports franchises.

According to a Reddit blog post, Reddit sees its sports fans as “our most engaged Reddit Pro users and best-in-class examples of the power of engagement.” It was also noted that the sports communities are “one of the most popular and fastest growing interest groups,” with more than 1000 communities in all.

While Reddit is saying they believe the new partnerships can enhance the community experience, they also mention that the hope is for the sports content on Reddit to enable advertisers to align with the fan content.

Additional Sports Content That Will Be Added to Reddit

Reddit did an initial test with the NFL during the 2023 – 2024 season. It brought Samsung, Ford, Volkswagen of America, and more in as advertisers. The social media site is hoping to bring more of that same success. An alcoholic beverage brand lifted purchase intent 11.3 points, brand favorability 9.4 points, and awareness by 5.9 points. This was all just from premium brand content from the league.

Reddit users will get access to video highlights from games and tournaments, player AMAs, behind-the-scenes videos, and other special content that the leagues post. This will include special events, like the Super Bowl and NBA All-Star games.

Reddit’s Chief Operating Officer, Jen Wong, believes that sports fans can “dive deeper than anywhere else” and connect more with others during the regular season and off-season as well.

It was with good research that Reddit launched into this venture. It was noted in the blog post that more than half the Reddit users believe the social media platform allows them to be a “bigger sports fan.” They also feel it brings them camaraderie they won’t get in other communities and that “sports culture” is as important as the game itself.

Reddit Sports by the Numbers

Along with the 1,000 active sports communities on Reddit, there are also 20.4 billion screenviews to the Sports category in the past year, which is up 26 percent, year to year. There are also 249 million global monthly posts, votes, and comments in the Sports communities on Reddit.

“Building on five years of incredible collaboration, the NFL believes in the power of Reddit to enhance the fan experience,” said NFL VP of Business Development and Strategic Investments, Brent Lawton. “By renewing our partnership, we can continue engaging with Reddit’s growing NFL fan base and provide powerful content to advertisers looking for an NFL audience.”

Along with more sports content on Reddit, you may be wondering why you’re also seeing Reddit pop up more in Google searches. This article explains it! We can also help if you’re looking to read Reddit posts or comments that were deleted.
